Ayurvedic Lunch According to the Doshas

Ayurveda mandates that lunch should be the largest meal of the day as the digestive fire of Agni is strong at noon. A healthy lunch according to one’s prakriti or Ayurvedic constitution helps strengthen immunity and also prevent illnesses.

Here are the Ayruvedic guidelines for a healthy lunch.

• Avoid raw salads – Raw salads can aggravate Vata dosha. It is best to sautee the vegetables in spices and ghee and have them warm for lunch.

• Khichdi according to dosha – Khichdi for a Pitta person can contain basmati rice, moong beans, vegetables, turmeric, cilantro, etc. Kapha can choose brown rice as it is heating and dry. Along with basmati rice, a Vata person can include warming spices like mustard, ajwain, asafoetida, cumin, etc.

• Sweet potato – Sweet potato helps pacify all three doshas and is considered an ideal choice for lunch. Saute it with a teaspoon of ghee and spices for lunch.

• Soup – Soup is a recommended way to start lunch. A warm soup containing spices, garlic, ginger, etc. is ideal.

• Dosha specific rice – Lemon rice helps pacify Vata and Pitta dosha, tomato rice is good for Kapha, coconut rice for Vata and Pitta and curd rice for Pitta.

• Fresh fruit – Fruit should be eaten alone or one and half hour after food.
